Protect Wild Lands

Welcome to EasternSierraWild.org, a local source for information about recently introduced wilderness legislation in California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada.

From 14,000 foot peaks to desert canyons, Inyo and Mono counties are mostly public lands. This presents a unique opportunity for preserving wild open spaces as wilderness.

Wilderness designation for more of the region’s most pristine lands means these special places will never be developed, but instead will remain in their natural state, accessible for hiking, fishing, horseback riding and backcountry use.

Support Wilderness Legislation

Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon and Senator Barbara Boxer have introduced a bill that will protect pristine lands in the Eastern Sierra as wilderness. View the bill here. Read a fact sheet about the bill here. Go to Congressman McKeon’s site to view maps.

This bill represents the hard work and compromise of local citizens and legislators. When people work together for the common good, great things can happen!

Wilderness is Your Business

Wilderness designation is good for the Eastern Sierra’s economy–millions of visitors come to the region every year to enjoy beautiful, unspoiled scenery. The Eastern Sierra’s economy depends on tourism and the recreational opportunities that wild lands provide–it adds up to some $700 million dollars in economic benefits for Inyo and Mono counties.
